The Five Guys restaurant chain making a new home in Harrison

Finally! A reason for Harrisonians to visit the new Harrison Station complex: a restaurant. That is, a Five Guys restaurant. Yes, a burger chain. Besides the Burger King that opened up on Harrison Avenue a couple of years ago, the only place Harrisonians could go for fast food was Wendy's. If you wanted anything else besides pizza and Chinese food, you had to leave town. With the Harrison Station part of town deep in renovations and construction, a new place to eat is a perfect boost to get people interested.

Most of us in town have probably visited a Five Guys or two in other areas (there are 800 nationwide, including 42 in NJ), and some of us have to be pretty excited about this new development. For you newbies, here's a lowdown on Five Guys:

The Pros:

The food at Five Guys is fresh, not frozen: coolers are used instead of freezers, giving customers juicier, more authentic burgers.

More jobs are being brought to Harrison: this financially-strapped town could use more jobs, as well as business.

Another place to eat: while we do have a nice amount of restaurants to choose from, fast food places are perfect for those with tighter budgets.

It's somewhere new for the kids to hang out: Wendy's can get old after a while (no offense). Burger King? It's on the other side of town. This is right by the PATH station. Talk about a cooler way to eat and run.

No trans-fats! : is this still important? Us Americans seem more concerned lately with calorie counts and non-fructose corn syrup. Still, this can be comforting to dieters.

You can order your food online: the Five Guys' website allows customers to place their orders for pick-up. They also offer free mobile apps for both iPhones and Droids- a great convenience for commuters coming home from work.

The Cons:

Another fast food burger chain is coming to town: isn't two enough? If Harrison wants to appear more diverse and commuter friendly, it could use more variety of places to eat.

Five Guys restaurants don't have drive-throughs: A big deal for a lot of us, for sure. Who wants to wait in line when they're in a hurry?

Commuter traffic is bound to be HUGE: Being right by the PATH, chances are it'll always be busy, making it hard to dine in.

It's all the way by the PATH: Still a rather isolated section of town, burger lovers might not be too interested in walking all the way to Five Guys. Let's face it- Burger King and Wendy's are closer.

Their burgers are deep in calories: The Center for Science in the Public Interest named their 920 calorie-laden bacon cheeseburger one of the most unhealthy meals available at chain restaurants in the country. Not the best thing to eat when you're watching your weight.

There is a light at the end of this fast food tunnel, however. Also joining Harrison Station will be  Pronto Gourmet, which will undoubtedly offer healthier alternatives. If Harrison (or the section being referred to as “Harrison Station”) is going to be its own metropolis of sorts, it's going to need to offer more places to eat. Five Guys is a start, and it sure beats nothing, right? Rather than be pessimistic about another fast food joint coming to town, let's focus on the positive; it's business and people coming to town. And when your town is named #4 on the most debt-ridden cities in America, there's nothing wrong with that.
